First few weeks of a new employee
Wow you have just taken on a
new member to the team or your small business.
Look at the first few weeks and months to see
what you can do also to make it a smooth transition.
The cost around the recruitment process and the
valuable training you offer are all crucial parts
to the first few weeks and months.
My advice for you is to be prepared,
understand what it is you want them to be doing
and prepare everything before their FIRST DAY!
Have a clear understanding of their tasks and
what training needs to be put in place to ensure
they are given an opportunity to learn the role
100 %. Be patient with them.
Make sure the computer set up
is done before they start and ensure all the tools
are in place eg: desk, chair and anything they
will require to perform the role. If business
cards are required then they must also be ready
to go, this can be unprofessional for someone
to say a they have already started in their new
role –“ Im waiting for my business
cards to be printed.” Its such an easy process
to organise and can be within 3 days to print.
So this is all good to go and
now they are at the desk with a training plan
in place, you have introduced them around to everyone
– and yes everyone. Introduce them to someone
also if you are not available as a buddy/coach
to ensure all parties are aware the new team member
can ask questions to that buddy/coach.
Make them feel at ease immediately
and explain how the company or business works,
don’t expect the new team member to know
everything.
Once they have settled into the
position in the first week – meet with them
weekly or even daily to see how they are going
and identify where they are at and how you can
help them through. Communication is the most important
part of this process. I always believe it takes
a good 3 months to settle into a position and
even 6 – 12 months.
Best of luck
